26039 Pte. Charles New

26039 Private Charles New was born in 1898 at Odd Rode, he was the son of Charles and Harriet (nee Theobald) New who married in All Saints Church, Odd Rode on the 8^th February 1887, he had an older sister called Jane born in 1893. On the 1911 census Charles lived at Cricketers Arms Cottage, Rode Heath, he was unmarried. After the war his parents lived at Mill Terrace, Rode Heath.

There are no surviving military records for Charles, so we have no details or dates of where and when he enlisted, but from his medal index card, we know he must have signed up after 1915, as he was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal. Charles was killed on 13^th October 1916 he is buried in Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Northern France (Grave reference: II.1.2).
