76840 Private Herbert Ernest Taylor was born in 1898 in Spring
Bank, Odd Rode, he was one of five children to Arthur William (born
in North Flintshire, Wales)
and Mary Alice Barrett, Arthur’s occupation was a Joiner/Carpenter on
the 1901 census the family lived in Spring Bank Cottages, Spring Bank,
Odd Rode.
Herbert wasn’t the only son to go to war, his two older brother’s
442074 Private Thomas Roland Taylor & 4743 Private Arthur William
Taylor also fought, one joined in 1914 and the other in 1915, both survived.
Herbert enlisted in Stoke on Trent after 1916, there are no surviving service
records for him, and his Medal Index Card doesn’t give us any information
about his Military Service. Herbert was killed on the 14th
October 1918, his body was never found, he
has no grave, but is remembered on Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
