22349 Pt. Harry Birtles

22349 Private Harry Birtles was born in 1893 in Odd Rode, he was christened in All Saints Church, Odd Rode on the 19^th October 1893, and he was the son of Peter and Alethea Birtles of Cinder Hill, Scholar Green. Harry’s occupation was Second Footman to the Duke of Northumberland; he worked and lived in Alnwick Castle.

There are no surviving service records for Harry; all we know is that he enlisted in Alnwick in 1915 and that he went to France on the 9^th December 1915, he was killed on the 11^th November 1918 in France, his body was never found, he is remembered on panel 3 on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial.
