"My GG Great Grandfather,
Jacob Bailey (snr), is shown living in Mow Cop with his wife Penelope & children
from 1861 to his death in 1881. During that time he went from being a forge
labourer to a coal miner. His son, William is on the 1871 census living in
Mow Cop with his wife Ellen & assorted children where he is working as a “Forge
man”. Their son, Jacob, was my Great Grandfather & was born in Mow Cop along
with most of his siblings. He had a half brother William, 3 full brothers;
Hugh, Walter & Arthur, plus 2 step siblings; Fanny & Daniel Rowley. Jacob
(jnr) grew up in a house at the foot of Mow Cop where, apparently, along with
his brothers, they were able to jump out of their bedroom window & climb straight
up the hill to the castle. After 1881 most of my Baileys moved to the Brindley
Ford area. Jacob Bailey (jnr) married Mary Ellen Machin (from Outclough Farm,
Norton in the Moors) in 1905.”
Yours Faithfully Mrs
Lucy Meyer-Hübner
