James’s father, John Skellern was born
in Newchapel, his mother,
Maria Lawton was born in Mow Cop they married in 1879 in All Saints, Odd Rode.
In 1901 the family lived in Crewe, Cheshire.
At the age of 23 James emigrated to Australia. On
his Australian service records it stated: Born March 24th 1888. Had ordinary day school education, and
won a scholarship for a three-year course at a Secondary school. Became a clerk in the service of the L.N.W Rly
Co, Crewe, England. In his leisure studied,
he succeeded in gaining a pupil teacher certificate. Decided to try his fortune
in Australia
and emigrated alone.
James worked for the New South Wales Government Railway & Tramways,
N.S.W.
He was mortally wounded at Lone Pine, Suvla Bay Landing & was buried at sea. |
